Biker waves? Yes.
It was just one tiny detail I needed to make How Sweet the Sound ring true for readers. And why, you ask, did I need to know about “Biker Waves”? For my tattoo-covered bad boy biker Trevor Dalton, of course. He politely returns the salutes of several “Hellhounds” who pass him on the streets of Cave-in-Rock. You see, the outlaw motorcycle gang is in town for their annual wild and crazy gathering called Hellhound Homecoming.
Trevor is quite the mysterious man in How Sweet the Sound. He doesn’t at all fit Merrideth’s stereotype of bikers. She is reminded not to judge a man by his exterior, nor by his mode of transportation.
And one part of biker culture is their greeting to one another. You’ve seen them. When one motorcyclist meets another coming toward him, he’ll often put his arm out at a downward angle and extend one or two fingers. He’s saluting the other biker. What does it mean, and why does he do it? Here’s how one motorcycle enthusiast explains it:
I’m trying to tell other bikers that I appreciate that they’ve made the choice to forego the safety of an enclosed cage on four wheels in favor of the free feeling that comes from being on two wheels in the wind.
Did you know there are different “salutes” for different occasions? Well, I didn’t either. You can read all about them HERE. And if you aren’t easily offended by bad language, you might want to check out a chart of common meanings to the various waves HERE.
I can’t wait for you to meet Trevor Dalton. How Sweet the Sound will be released in late May of 2015. If you haven’t already signed up for my newsletter V.I.P. Perks you can do so in the sidebar of my website. You’ll be among the first to hear when it is available, along with the inside scoop on book discounts and giveaways.
It would be so nice of you to share!
